NEEDHAM MARKET is a hamlet of the parish of Barking, a polling place
for East Suffolk, and a railway station and well built town, lighted with gas,
situated on the Great Eastern Railway, 76 ¾ miles from London, 8 ¾ from Ipswich,
and 3 1/2 from Stowmarket, bounded on the east by the navigable river Gipping.
This town is in Bosmere and Claydon union and hundred, rural deanery of Bosmere,
county court district of Stowmarket. archdeaconry of Suffolk, Norwich diocese,
East Suffolk. The church of St. John the Baptist is a fine old spacious
structure, with wooden belfry. The living is a perpetual curacy, annual value
£91, in the gift of the rector for the time being of the parish of Barking, in
this county, and held by the Rev. George Alexander Paske, M.A., of Clare
College, Cambridge. There is a Free Grammar school for the education of 21
youths connected with the church, and a new National school has just been
erected by subscription. There is an Independent chapel, and connected therewith
is a British school. The Society of Friends also have a small meeting house, and
a girls' Free school attached. Petty sessions are held at the 'Swan' every
alternate Wednesday. The almshouses are for 8 poor persons; the occupiers have a
small weekly allowance and coals and candles. An almshouse for 4 inmates was
erected in 1858, in fulfilment of the desire of the late Mrs. Lucy Maw. There
are some small charities for the benefit of the poor, of the value of nearly £60
per annum. The Right Hon. the Earl of Ashburnham is lord of the manor. There is
a fair on October 28th. There is a manufactory for the celebrated crown glue in
this town. In 1850 a public library and reading room was established here. The
population in 1861 was 1,377, and the area is nearly 1,000 acres.
