NETTLESTEAD is a village and parish, 2 ½ miles west from Claydon
station, 6 north-west from Ipswich, in Bosmere and Claydon union and hundred,
Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Bosmere, archdeaconry of
Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk. The church of St. Mary contains a
handsome monument to the memory of Mr. Samuel Sayer and his wife, who died in
the reign of Charles I. Date of register, 1618. The living is a rectory, tithe
rent-charge £190, with 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held bv the Rev.
John Jackson, M.A., of Little Blakenham. At Nettlestead Hall there is an ancient
gateway, on
which arc the quarterings of the Wentworth family, who were formerly lords of
the soil. The population in 1861 was 105, and the parish contains 1,028 acres,
which belong to
Mr. Edward Snell, George Tomline, Esq., M.P., William M. Carthew, Esq., and
several others.
