NORTON is a parish, in Blackbourn hundred and rural deanery, Stow
union, Bury St. Edmund's county court district, archdeaconry of Sudbury, and
diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 2 ½ miles north-east from Elmswell station, 88 ½
from London, and 7 east-north-east from Bury St. Edniuud's. The church is named
St. Andrew's. The living is a rectory, in the gift of St. Peter's College,
Cambridge, with a yearly rent-charge of £611 in lieu of tithes, and held by the
Rev. Aldersey Dicken, D.D. formerly of that college; the Rev. John Trevatham,
M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge, is curate. A Baptist chapel was erected in
1843, at a cost of £700, by Mr. S. Hustler. The National school was built in
1839. 'The population in 1861 was 948, and the area is 2,449 acres.
