OFFTON is a parish and village, in Bosmere and Claydon union and
hundred, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Bosmere, archdeaconry
of Sudbury, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 5 miles west from Claydon
station, 78 from London, 4 ½ south-west from Needham Market, and 7 ½ north-west
from Ipswich. The church of St. Mary is a small building, with square tower. The
living is a vicarage, with the rectory of Little Bricett annexed, joint annum
value £124, with residence, in the gift of W. H. Sparrow, Esq., and held by the
Rev. John Elijah Thompson, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge; it had a
yearly modus of £183 10s. awarded in 1839. W. H. Sparrow, Esq., is lay
impropriator. Here are the remains of Offton Castle.
LITTLE BRICETT is a hamlet, containing the farm of Tollemache Hull, which
belongs to Sir Robert Shafto Adair, Bart. The Hall, now converted into a
farmhouse, derived its name from the ancient family of Tollemache, and was
formerly the seat of the Kemps ond D'Autreys. James Cuddon, Esq. (lord of the
manor), H. W. Sparrow, Esq., R. Kersey, Esq., and Sir Robert Shafto Adair,
Bart., are the principal owners of the soil. The population of the entire parish
in 1861 was 304; the area is 1,561 acres.
