OLD NEWTON is a village and parish, in Stow hundred, union, county
court district, and rural deanery, Suffolk archdeaconry, and Norwich diocese,
West Suffolk, one mile east from Haughley junction, 84 miles from London, 15
from Ipswich, and 2 from Stowmarket. The church of St. Mary is an ancient
structure, in the Elizabethan style, with porch, chancel, and square tower
containing 5 bells. The register commences in 1653. The living is a vicarage,
tithes commuted at £168 14s., with residence and pleasure grounds, in the gift
of the Church Patronage Society, and held by the Rev. Hugh Thomas, M.A., of
Magdalen College, Cambridge. The rectorial tithes are commuted for £414 per
annum, and are in the possession of G. Falkner, Esq., of London. The town lands
are between 4 and 5 acres. Dagworth Hall, now a farm, is in the most picturesque
part of the village. G. Tomline, Esq., M. P., is lord of the manor. Part of this
parish lies in other manors. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel. Linen is
woven here. The produce of the soil is principally wheat, barley, oats, and
hops. The population in 1861 was 718; the parish is very straggling, and
contains 2,348 acres.
CROSS GREEN lies to the west.
