OTLEY is a parish and large village, in Carlford hundred, Woodbridge
union and county court district, rural deanery of Carlford, archdeaconry of
Suffolk, and Norwich diocese, East Suffolk, 8 miles north from Ipswich, 7
north-west from Woodbridge, and 13 from Stowmarket. The church of St. Mary is a
beautiful Gothic building, with nave, chancel, south porch, and square-built
tower containing 5 bells, and organ: the interior is neatly decorated, and the
east window, partly of stained glass, was the gift of Paul Storr, Esq. The
living is a rectory, annual value �700, with residence, in the gift of the Earl
of Abergavenny, and held by the Rev. Charles Benjamin Tayler, M.A., of Trinity
College, Cambridge, The Rev. Francis Storr erected a commodious school-room for
the children of the parish, and a cottage attached to it for the master and
mistress. There is a Baptist chapel in this parish. The Earl of Abergavenny and
Gurdon Rebow, Esq., who are lords of the manors, and the Rev. George Thomas
Turner are the principal landowners. There is a bequest of �1 a year to be given
in bread to the poor. To the south is an old entrenchment. The population in
1861 was 615, and the area is 2,157 acres.
