OULTON is a large village and parish, in Mutford and Lothingland incorporation and hundred, county court district of Lowestoft, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and dioccse of Norwich, East Suffolk, about 2 miles west from Lowestoft, a mile from Mutford Bridge station, 8 miles from Yarmouth, and 9 from Beccles, bounded by the south-western part of Lake Lothing and the river Waveney. The church of St. Michael is a handsome structure of ancient date, with a square tower in the centre containing 5 bells: it has a nave and chancel, and a porch on the south side, and contains a good organ : it was restored in 1862. The register dates from 1059. The living is a rectory; the tithes have been commuted for £462 per annum, with residence and 50 acres of glebe land, in the patronage of Sir Samuel Morton Peto, Bart., M.P.., and held by the Rev. Charles Snell, M.A. Here is a Parochial school for boys and girls, supported by voluntary contributions. Dudley Oliver, Esq., is lord of the manor. The population in 1861 was 747, and the area is 1,997 acres .
