The innkeeper listed for 1869 and 1874, Henry Howes, was my 2 x Great Grandfather.
After Benjamin Crawford's death in 1866, Henry Howes married his widow Maria
(nee Baxter). She had had one son William with Benjamin; but had several more
children with Henry. My Great Grandfather was born at the inn in 1869. In 1875, the
family moved just down the road to the
Railway Tavern at Diss. However, Maria
died in a street accident in 1885 (a hoof to the head). Henry remained landlord
of the Railway Tavern until 1900. ***
