REDLINGFIELD is a village and parish, in Hartismere hundred, union,
and rural deanery, Eye county court district, Suffolk archdeaconry, and Norwich
diocese, West Suffolk, 7 miles east from Finningham station, and 3 south-by-east
from Eye. The church, an old building without a tower, was formerly a chapel to
a Benedictine nunnery, founded here in 1120, and in a hole in the south wall are
a swarm of bees that followed the corpse of Mrs. Cracknell, of this place, above
40 years ago, where they have remained ever since.
The oldest register has been destroyed ; that now in existence dates from 1740.
The living is a perpetual curacy, gross annual value �71 5s. per annum, in the
gift of Sir Robert Shafto Adair, Bart., of Flixton, near Bungay, and held by the
Rev, Charles Notly, B.D., of St. John's College. Cambridge, head master of the
Grammar school at Eye. The land is a rich loam, and is principally the property
of Sir Robert Shnfto Adair, Bart., who is lord of the manor and impropriator of
the tithes, commuted in 1830 at �208 per annum; but there are a few other landed
proprietors, namely, George Barber, Esq., of Norwich; Charles Clarke, Esq.;
Thomas Kerry, Esq., of Denham, near Eye; and Edgar Chenery, Esq., of Eye. The
charities arise from land, which lets for �60 per annum, which is applied for
the use of the poor, repairs of the church, etc. The population in 1861 was 203,
and the area is 1,075 acres; the gross rental is �1,608 l5s.6d., and the
rateable value �1,545 10s.
