REDLINGFIELD is a village and parish, in Hartismere hundred, union, and rural deanery, Eye county court district, Suffolk archdeaconry, and Norwich diocese, West Suffolk, 7 miles east from Finningham station, and 3 south-by-east from Eye. The church, an old building without a tower, was formerly a chapel to a Benedictine nunnery, founded here in 1120, and in a hole in the south wall are a swarm of bees that followed the corpse of Mrs. Cracknell, of this place, above 40 years ago, where they have remained ever since.
The oldest register has been destroyed ; that now in existence dates from 1740. The living is a perpetual curacy, gross annual value 71 5s. per annum, in the gift of Sir Robert Shafto Adair, Bart., of Flixton, near Bungay, and held by the Rev, Charles Notly, B.D., of St. John's College. Cambridge, head master of the Grammar school at Eye. The land is a rich loam, and is principally the property of Sir Robert Shnfto Adair, Bart., who is lord of the manor and impropriator of the tithes, commuted in 1830 at 208 per annum; but there are a few other landed proprietors, namely, George Barber, Esq., of Norwich; Charles Clarke, Esq.; Thomas Kerry, Esq., of Denham, near Eye; and Edgar Chenery, Esq., of Eye.
