Rickinghall Inferior public houses & 1865 directory
RICKINGHALL INFERIOR in 1844, is 8 miles N. E. of Ixworth, and 7 miles W.
S.W. of Diss, is a large village, which forms a western suburb of the town of
Botesdale, and lies north of Rickinghall Superior. Its parish has 432 souls, and
1,966 acres of fertile land. It was anciently the lordship and demesne of
Ulfketel, Earl of East Anglia, who gave it to the monks of Bury. It was granted
by Henry VIII, to Sir Nicholas Bacon, whose family sold it to the Holts. G. St.
Vincent Wilson, Esq., is now lord of the manor, owner of a great part of the
soil, and patron of the Church, (St. Mary) which has a round tower and three
bells. The benefice is a rectory, valued in K. B. at £16 5s. 2d., and in 1835 at
£850, with that of Rickinghall Superior annexed to it. The Rev. Thomas Peyton
Slapp, of Old Buckenham, Norfolk, is the incumbent, and has now a yearly modus
of £1,052, in lieu of the tithes of the two parishes. There is a parsonage house
in each parish, and the glebe comprises 47a. T Thornhill, Esq., Messrs. J. & B.
Smith, T. Norton, and several smaller owners, have estates here. An allotment of
9a. was awarded on an enclosure, in lieu of land, held from ancient time, for
the general use of the parish, and of 1r. 12p. which had been devised by Joseph
Barnes, in 1731, for the relief of the poor. The allotment is let for £25 8s. a
year, of which 10s. is given to the poor, and the remainder is applied in
repairing the church, or similar purposes. The poor have also 10s. a year as
interest of £10 left by John Brown, in 1731, and £7 17s. 6d. yearly from 2a. 3b.
