RICKINGHALL, INFERIOR is a village and parish, in Blackbourn hundred
and union, county court district of Eye, rural deanery of Hartismere,
archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, West Suffolk, 5 miles west from
Mellis station, 5 ½ from Finningham station, 8 north-east from Ixworth, and 7
south-west from Diss. The church of St. Mary is an ancient structure, with round
tower, nave, and large south aisle, at the east and west ends of which are two
handsome pinnacles. The living is a rectory, with that of Rickinghall Superior
annexed, joint annual value £850, with residence, and 30 acres of glebe, in the
gift of George Holt Wilson, Esq., and held by the Rev. Richard Compton Maul,
M.A. The Baptists and Wesleyan Methodists have each a chapel here. There is also
a National school. The population in 1861 was 437, and the area is 1,510 acres,
the greater part of which belongs to George Holt Wilson, Esq., who is lord of
