RICKINGHALL SUPERIOR is a villageand parish, in Hartismere hundred, union, and rural deanery, countv court district of Eye, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, West Suffolk, adjoining Botesdale, 7 miles southwest from Diss, 8 � west-by-north from Eye, 8 north-east from Ixworth, and 14 from Bury St. Edmund's. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice, in good repair, with round tower, nave and chancel. The living is annexed to Rickinghall Inferior, joint annual value �850, with parsonage house and 14 acres of glebe, in the gift of George Holt Wilson, Esq.. and held by the Rev. R. C. Maul, M.A.; the Rev, Thomas Edward Wilkinson, B.A, is curate. G.H. Wilson, Esq., is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The population in 1861 was 742; area, 1,857 acres.
