ROUGHAM is a parish and village, in Thedwestry hundred and rural
deanery, Thingoe union, Bury St. Edmund's county court district, Sudbury
archdeaconry, diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, one mile and a half south from
Thurston station on the Bury and Ipswich line, a branch of the Great Eastern
Railway, 92 miles from London, and 4 east-by-south from Bury St. Edmund's. The
church of St. Mary is a large handsome building, with a tower and 5 bells, nave,
aisles, chancel, porch and font, and contains an ancient monument of Sir Roger
Drury and his lady, who died in 1400 and 1405, and are interred beneath a flat
stone, adorned with their figures in brass. The register dates from about the
middle of the sixteenth century. The living is a rectory, and has a yearly
rent-charge of �850 in lieu of tithes, with residence, in the gift of Philip
Bennet, Esq., and held by the Rev. Morton Shaw, M.A., of Brasenose College,
Oxford. The Baptists have a chapel here. Here is a Free school, endowed with �50
yearly, and house for the master. Rougham Hall, the property and seat of Philip
Bennet, Esq.. D.L., is a magnificent mansion of brick, in the Gothic and
Elizabethan styles of architecture, with lofty towers at the east and west
wings, and handsome Gothic portico entrance in the east front: it stands in an
extensive and well wooded park, containing some of the finest oaks in the
county. There are also several other neat residences in this parish. The soil is
sandy and loamy; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats,
barley, and beans, and green crops generally. The principal landowner is Philip
Bennet, Esq., who owns the manor. The population in 1861 was 988, and the area
is 3,840 acres.
