RUSHMERE (near Lowestoft) is a parish and village in a quiet valley, in Mutford and Lothingland incorporation and hundred, Lowestoft county court district, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 18 miles from Saxmundham, 6 south from Beccles, 5 ½ south-west from Wangford, and 5 from Lowestoft. The church of St. Michael is an old building, with round tower and thatched roof, and has 2 small bells: it consists of a nave and chancel, and a porch on the south side, and has undergone repair. The register dates from 710. The living is a rectory, tithes commuted at £212 per annum, with residence, and 9 acres of glebe land, in the patronage of Lord Boston and Frederick William Irby, Esq., jointly, and held by the Rev. Thomas William Irby, B.A. A Parochial school for boys and girls has been established and is supported by the rector. Here are sand-pits. The population in 1861 was 121, and the area is 759 acres.
