SEMER is a parish and village, in Cosford hundred and union, Hadleigh county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 3 miles north-west from Hadleigh station, 2 from Bildestone, and 8 from Lavenham. The church of All Saints is of Norman structure, and is in good repair. The living is a rectory, value £370, with residence, in the gift of, and held by, the Rev. James Young Cooke, M.A., J.P., who is also lord of the manor. The annual value of the charities of this parish is 40s. Cosford Union Work House is in this parish: the union comprises the following places:— Aldham, Bildeston, Boxford, Brent Eleigh, Brettenham, Chelsworth, Cockfield, Edwardstone, Elmsett, Groton, Hadleigh (parish), Hadleigh (hamlet), Hitcham, Kersey, Kettlebaston, Lavenham, Layham, Lindsey, Milden, Monks Eleigh, Naughton, Nedging, Polstead, Preston, Semer, Thorpe Morieux, Wattisham, and Whatfleld. The population in 1861 was 429, and the extent of the parish is 1,248 acres.
