SHELLAND is a parish, in Stow hundred, union, county court district,
and rural deanery, Suffolk archdeaconry, and Norwich diocese, West Suffolk, 3 ½
miles west-north-west from Stowmarket station. The church (dedication unknown)
is a small plain building, consisting of nave and chancel only, with turret and
1 bell. The living is a perpetual curacy, value about £60 yearly, in the girt of
Charles Tyrell, Esq., and held by the Rev. Samuel Christmas Brown, B.A., of St.
John's College, Cambridge. C. Tyrell, Esq., and Capt. John Garnham are the chief
landowners, the former is lord of the manor and impropriator of the tithes. The
soil is mixed clay and sand. The population in 1861 was 99, and the area is 540
acres.
