SHOTTISHAM is a parish and village, in Wilford hundred and rural
deanery, Woodbridge union and county court district, archdeaconry of Suffolk,
and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 6 miles south-east from Woodbridge. The
church of St. Margaret, a stone building, was thoroughly repaired about 1845: it
has a nave, chancel, south porch, and tower with 1 bell. The living is a
rectory, value £240, with residence, and about 20 acres of glebe, in the gift of
the Rev. William Darby and Rev. Martin Baily Darby, and held by the Rev. Edward
Francis, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge. There are charities of the
annual value of £2, payable on New Year's Day. There is a bequest, derivable
from certain lands in the parish, for the repairs of the church, to the amount
of £5 annually, made by some person whose name is unknown. Here is a national
school for boys and girls.
The Rev. William Darby and the Rev. Martin B. Darby (who are joint lords of the
manor). Lord Rendlesham, and John Henry Anger, Esq., are the principal
landowners. The population in 1861 was 317, and the area is 1,135 acres.
