SIBTON is a parish, in Blything hundred and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 5 miles north-west from Saxmundham, 7 south from Halesworth, and a mile and a half west from Yoxford. The church of St. Peter is an old building in the Gothic style. The living is a discharged vicarage, value £200, in the gift of J. W. Brooke, Esq., and held by the Rev. Sterling Moseley Westhorp, M.A.; the Rev. O. Wilkinson, assistant curate. Sibton Park, the seat of J. W.Brooke, Esq., D.L., is an elegant mansion on a pleasing elevation: a portion of the estate is laid out in pleasure grounds, intersected by a lake, with wooded park and meadows. The abbey ruins are the remains of a Cistercian abbey, formerly a splendid edifice, founded about the year 1150, and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin; at the Dissolution its revenues were valued at £250 15s. 7d. per annum. Here is a Free school, founded and endowed by Dorothea Scrivener, A.D. 1719. The population in 1861 was 489, and the area is 2,861 acres.
Parish Clerk, George Cooper.
