SOUTHOLT is a village and parish, in Hoxne union, hundred, and rural
deanery, Suffolk archdeaconry, county court district of Eye, and diocese of
Norwich, East Suffolk, 5 miles south-west from Stradbroke, 8 east from Mollis
station, 20 north from Ipswich, 5 north from Debenham, 3 from Rishangles, and 5
south-east from Eye. The church of St. Margaret is a very ancient structure,
with bell turret, and capable of accommodating 186 persons. The living is a
chapelry, consolidated with the rectory of Worlingworth, joint annual value
£933, in the gilt of Lord Henniker, M.P., and held by the Rev. Frederic French,
M.A., of St. Peter's College, Cambridge, who resides at Worlingworth; the Rev.
Robert Hope, M.A., of Queen's College, Cambridge, is curate. The town lands are
in the hands of trustees, and are let for about £80 per annum, which is applied
towards the general repairs and expenses of the church, the support of daily
schoolmistress, and the residue amongst the poor, according to the trustees'
directions. Edgar Chenery, Esq., of Eye, is lord of the manor. The executors of
Sir James Flower, Frederick Clarke, Esq., John Barker, Esq., of Southolt Park,
and Thomas French, Esq., of Eye, are the principal landed proprietors. The
population in 1861 was 193, and the area is 798 acres; the rateable value is
£1,083 15s.
