WICKHAM SKEITH is a parish and village, in Hartismere hundred, union,
and deanery, Eye county court district, Suffolk archdeaconry, and diocese of
.Norwich. West Suffolk, 3 miles north from Mendlesham, 5 south-west from Eye, 3
north-east from Finningkam station, and 88 from London. The church of St. Andrew
is a small old building, and has in its tower 6 bells: it was restored in 1858.
The register commences in 1682. The living is a vicarage, the vicarial tithes
commuted in 1839 at �130 per annum, and the rectorial at �422, in the gift of,
and held by, the Rev. Castell Garrard, M.A ., of Corpus Christi College,
Cambridge. Under an ancient oak, on Wizard Farm, many Saxon coins of Harold and
Edward the Confessor have been found, which are deposited in the British Museum.
The Hall, rebuilt in 1845- 6, situated in a pretty part of the village, is n
handsome building, now the residence of the vicar of the parish. There is a
small school, supported by the incumbent and the parishioners. The Wesleyans
have a small chapel here. Here are some fine oaks. Lord Henniker, M.P., is lord
of the manor. The greater part of the soil belongs to J. G. Sbeppard, Esq., of
Campsey Ashe, Lord Henniker, M.P., of Thornham Magna, G. E. Frere, Esq., of
Roydon, Charles Tyrell, Esq., of Haughley, E. B. Venn, Esq., of Freston, near
Ipswich, and several small owners. It contains 1,170a. Ir. 25p. of fertile and
well wooded land, and in 1861 contained 564 inhabitants. The gross estimated
rental is �3,535, and rateable value �3,185.
