WILBY is a small village and parish, in Hoxne hundred, union and rural deanery, Framlingham county court district, Suffolk archdeaconry, and Norwich diocese, East Suffolk, 10 miles from the Harleston railway station, 2 south from Stradbroke, 7 north-west from Framlingham, and 8 south-east from Eye. The church of St. Mary is a handsome Norman structure, with lofty square tower and 6 musical bells, and very handsome ancient Gothic porch: it has nave, south aisle, and chancel, and the interior contains some handsome carved oak, and a handsome monument of the Green family, with several brasses: the windows are partly of stained glass. The living is a rectory, tithes commuted at �646 per annum, with 50 acres of glebe, and handsome Gothic residence, in the gift of the Rev. George Mingaye, M.A., and held by the Rev. Thomas Charles Prickard, M.A., Cambridge. The soil is a mixture of rich loam and clay, with a subsoil of clay, and is very fertile. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and turnips. T. G. Corbett, Esq., is lord of the manor, but the property belongs in part to Sir E. C. Kerrison, Bart., M.P-, of Brome Hall, Sir R. S. Adair, Bart., of Flixton, and others. The charities amount to about �77 per annum, which is held in trust for the poor, and the feoffee is Mr. G. C. Seaman, of Wilby. The population in 1861 was 560, and the area is 1,844 acres. The gross estimated rental is �3,204, and the rateable value �2,731.
