WINSTON is a parish and village, in the union of Bosmere and Claydon, hundred of Thredling, county court district of Framlingham, rural deanery of Claydon, Suffolk archdeaconry, Norwich diocese, East Suffolk, and stands on an elevated position, 9 miles north-east from Needham Market station, 12 north from Ipswich, a mile south from Debenham, and 8 miles west from Framlingham. The church of St. Andrew is an old Gothic building, faced with flint stones, and capable of holding 200 persons; it has nave, chancel, and square steeple containing 5 bells. The register commences from 1558. The living is a vicarage, annual value £169, with about 38 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Ely, who are the impropriators of the great tithes, and held by the Rev. Andrew Gatenby, B.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge. The chief landed proprietors are Lord Henniker, M.P., of Thornham Magna, aud the Dean and Chapter of Ely, with others. The lords of the manor are the Dean and Chapter of Ely. A new Parochial school was erected in 1863 contiguous to the church, which is supported by the vicar, aided by the parishioners. The population in 1851 was 352, and the area is 1,476 acres. The gross estimated rental is £2,571, and rateable value £2,332. Parish Clerk, Caleb Kerridge.
