WISSETT is a Tillage and parish, in Blything hundred and union,
Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of Dunwich, archdeaconry of
Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 2 miles north-west from
Halesworth. The church of St. Andrew is an old building, with Norman tower, and
a remarkably fine arch, formerly one of the entrances; there is also another
arch worthy of notice: the interior has been repaired, with pews and vestry: the
stained glass windows, with emblems of the Apostles, were the gift of the late
Sir W. E. C. Hartopp, Bart.; the cost was �100. The parish register dates from
the year 1553. The living is a vicarage, annual value �115, with residence, in
the gift of Sir John Hartopp, Bart.; lord of the manor, and held by the Rev.
Robert Kemp, who is also incumbent of Walpole. Here is a Free school, and a neat
Independent chapel, built in 1841. The population in 1861 was 427; the area is
2,243a. Or. 35p. The gross value is �3,912 5s., and the rateable value �3,334.
