WITHERSDALE Is a village and parish, in Hoxne hundred, union, and
rural deanery, Harleston county court district, Suffolk archdeaconry, and
Norwich diocese, East Suffolk, 3 miles from Harleston, its post town and county
court district, and 7 north-by-east from Stradbroke. The church of St. Mary is a
small old building, with wooden belfry, nave and chancel: it is without tower,
and stands about a mile from the village. The living is a discharged rectory,
commuted rent-charge �232 10s., consolidated with the vicarage of Fressingfleld,
joint annual value �597, in the gift of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and held by
the Rev. William Royde Colbeck, B.D., of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, who
resides at Fressingfleld. The parish is intermixed with other parishes. Mrs.
Rayley, of Southwold, is lady of the manor and owner of part of the land; the
remainder belongs to Lord Henniker, M.P., and other proprietors. The charities
arise from the rent of two acres of land left for the use of the poor. The soil
is clay, with clay subsoil. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, and
pasture. The population in 1861 was 225; the area is 867a. Or. 33p. The gross
value is �1,364 16s. 10d., and the rateable value �1,243 13s. 7d.
