WITHERSFIELD is a parish, in Risbridge hundred and union, Haverhill county court district, rural deanery of Clare, Sudbury archdeaconry, diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, a mile and a half north-west from Haverhill. The church is named in honour of St. Mary. The living is a rectory, having 41 acres of glebe, and a yearly modus of £590, awarded in 1841, in lieu of tithes, in the gift of G. T. W. H. Duffield, Esq., and held by the Rev. William Mayd, M.A., of Exeter College, Oxford, who is chief landowner and lord of the manor. There is a charity, consisting of a cottage in four tenements, occupied rent free, and a blacksmiths shop, let foe £2 a year, which is applied in repairing the cottage: the donor is unknown. The crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, pease and roots. The soil is clay. The population in 1861 was 624, and the area is 2,509 acres.
