WITNESHAM is a parish and scattered village, in Carlford hundred and rural deanery, Woodbridge union, Ipswich county court district, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 4 miles north-east from Ipswich station. The church of St. Mary is a small ancient structure. The register dates from 1531. The living is a rectory, tithes commuted at 645, with residence, in the gift of St. Peter's College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. W. Potter, A.M., of that college. The Baptists have a chapel. A National school was erected, chiefly at the expense of the rector, in 1840. Here are sand and clay pits. The principal landowners are John C. Cobbold, Esq., M.P., Mr. Jeremiah Gooding, and Mr. R. H. Hatten. Mrs. Woodham is lady of the manor of Cockfield, and Mrs. M. G. Edgar is lady of the manor of Red Hall. The soil is mixed, and in parts stiff loam. The chief crops are wheat and barley.
