WORDWELL parish in 1844, is 5 miles N.N.W. of Bury St. Edmund's, comprises 2,120
acres of fertile land, but has ouly 66 inhabitants. It was one of the estates
sold by the last Marquis Cornwallis, and was anciently the property of a family
of its own name. It adjoins the extensive park of Culford Hall, the seat of the
Rev. E. R. Benyon, the present lord of the manor, who owns all the parish, and
has nearly the whole of it in his own occupation. He is also patron and
incumbent of the Church, (All Saints) which is a rectory, united with that of
West Stow. There are only a few cottages in the parish, occupied by labourers,
and Charles Petch, blacksmith and beer seller.
