WORLINGTON is a pleasant village and parish, in the hundred of
Lackford, Mildenhall union and county court district, Fordham rural deanery,
Sudbury archdeaconry, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, a mile west from
Mildenhall, and 4 miles north-east from Kennet railway station, on the
Cambridge, Newmarket, Bury, and Ipswich branch of the Great Eastern Railway,
situated on the south bank of the river Lark. The church of All Saints is an
ancient stone and flint building, in the Early English style of architecture,
with a tower containing 5 bells; it has nave, chancel, south aisle, porch, and
several monuments, and register chest containing documents dating from about the
middle of the sixteenth century. The living is a rectory, annual value �240,
with residence and 300 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Lady Windser, and
held by the Rev. William Singleton, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge.
There is a National school, and a Sunday school held in the school-room. The
population in 1861 was 349, and the area is 2,080 acres, chiefly the property of
William Honeywood, Esq., and George Gataker, Esq., each owning their own
manorial rights. The soil is principally sand; subsoil, chalk. A great portion
of the land is of inferior quality. Crops: wheat, barley and turnips. There are
rabbit warrens on the heath.
