WORLINGWORTH is a parish and village, in Hoxne hundred, union, and rural deanery, county court district of Framlingham, Suffolk archdeaconry, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 18 miles north from Ipswich, 6 south-east from Eye, 6 north-east from Debenham, 4 south from Stradbroke, and 6 north-west from Framlingham. The church of' St. Mary has a tower and 6 bells; it contains 400 sittings of ancient construction, and has a very handsome double hammer-beam oak roof, and a curious Gothic font and cover, which originally came from the abbey, Bury St. Edmund's: the whole church was restored in 1805. The register commences from 1588. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Southolt annexed, joint annual value �933, with 50 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Henniker, M.P., and held by the Rev. Frederic French, M.A., of St. Peter's College, Cambridge - the Rev. Robert Hope, M.A., of Queen's College, Cambridge, is curate, and resides in the adjoining parish of Southolt. There is a Free school attached to the church, erected in 1818. The charity lands let for about �200 per annum, and are left for the repairs and ornamentation of the church, the support of Trust school, and generally for the benefit of the poor, according to the donor's will. The chief landed proprietors are Lord Henniker, M.P., Sir R. S. Adair, Bart., of Flixton, near Bungay; T. W. F. V. Wentworth. Esq., of Aldborough, and a few smaller owners. Lord Henniker, M.P., is lord of the manor. The population in 1861 was 740, and the area is about 2,440 acres. The gross estimated rental is �4,213, and the rateable value, �3,577.
