Post Office Directory of 1865.
WORTHAM is a scattered village and parish, in the hundred and union
of Hartismere, Eye county court district. West Suffolk, 3 miles north-west from
Mellis station, 94 from London, 24 south-west from Diss, 6 north-west from Eye,
and 3 north-east from Botesdale. The church of St. Thomas and St. Mary is a
large old building: there was formerly a tower, but only the remains are now to
be seen. The living is a rectory, valued at �860 per annum, with 40 acres of
glebe land, in the gift of King's College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev.
Richard Cobbold, M.A., who resides at the Rectory House, a handsome mansion,
which he built at his own expense. Here is an ancient house, in which the Betts
family resided 300 years. Charles Harrison, Esq., has a neat residence here.
There is a Free school, supported by the rector, and the Hartismere Union
Workhouse for children. The population in 1861 as 961, and the area is 2,726
acres.
