YOXFORD is a parish, in Blything hundred and union, Halesworth county
court district, Dunwich rural deanery, Suffolk archdeaconry, and Norwich
diocese, East Suffolk, 23 miles north-east from London, 6 south from Halesworth,
23 north-east from Ipswich, 5south from Dunwich, 10 south from Aldborough, and a
mile from Darsham railway station on the Great Eastern line. The church of St.
Peter is an ancient structure, in the Perpendicular style: it has a tower with 6
bells, and surmounted by a small spire: it was enlarged in 1837, at a cost of
�1,200. The living is a vicarage, annual value �230, in the gift of, and held
by, the Rev. Robert Firmin, M.A. There is a Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist
chapel, a National school and a Mechanics' Institute. The town is on the old
road from Ipswich to Lowestoft and Yarmouth, consisting of one well built street
of modern houses: it is situated in a remarkably pleasant neighbourhood,
surrounded by a beautiful country, interspersed with many seats of the gentry,
and is lighted with gas. The scenery is wooded, picturesque, and magnificent.
Cockfield Hall, the seat of Sir John R. Blois, Bart, D.L., is a mansion in the
Tudor style, in a well-wooded park, through which flows the small river Yox or
Minsmere. Grove House and the Rookery are other handsome seats here. Petty
sessions are held every other Wednesday at the Three Tuns inn. Here are the
headquarters of the East Suffolk Constabulary. The population in 1861 was 1,111,
and the area is 2,724 acres.
