	James Thornton had a pub in Barnes (Land Tax Records) 1827-1830 and is shown 
	as ‘Publican’ in High Street Barnes in the 1841 Census. James died in 1855, 
	with 5 leasehold houses to leave to his children. In the 1851 Census, James Thornton 
	is shown as licensed victualler at the Arab Boy, in Putney. *
	
	James’ brother George Thornton had the ‘Two Brewers’ in Mortlake in 1841 
	(Census records), but had retired by 1851, when the pub was being run by 
	Thomas William Thornton, George’s nephew. George died in 1862 whilst living 
	at the ‘Devonshire Arms’, Kensington when it was being run by Alfred Howse – 
	yet another of my distant relatives!! *
