Caterham pub history index
The former Asylum Tavern, Asylum road, Caterham stood opposite the main gates of The Caterham Asylum for Idiots, Imbeciles and the Feebleminded (opened in 1870, it was renamed St Lawrence's Hospital in 1941, and closed 1994) at the corner of Asylum Road and Coulsdon Road.
At some point in the 1930s, Asylum Road was renamed Westway, it is possible that the pub was also renamed at this time, becoming the Caterham Arms.
The pub was popular with soldiers from the nearby Caterham Barracks and this led to it being targeted by the IRA.
On Sunday 28th September 1975 a bomb exploded during the evening Disco leaving 33 seriously injured.
Around 2010 the pub became The Village Inn, then The Caterham Arms again and currently The New Caterham Arms.
The current address is 83A Coulsdon Road, Caterham CR3 5NF.
