I was watching the Queen's funeral as her coffin comes into Windsor, 2022, which prompted me to look up the Prince of Wales Pub, Englefield Green. ***
I lived opposite the pub at 31 Bond Street ( corner of Blays Lane) between 1954 - 1961). My dad, Lawrence Ayton, whose parents had lived in the house before him, used to frequent this pub which was affectionately known as 'The Struggle'; dad once explained this was because it was a struggle to get in and even more of a struggle to get out!
I have vivid memories of going to the off licence which was at the side of the pub on Blays Lane. I was sent over to buy a bottle of cider and I remember Wally Dyos serving me. We used to take the bottles back in those days. ***
I only have distant memories of going into the pub itself, children didn't go into pubs then, but I may have been sent over to get my dad on occasion!
Wally Dyos and his wife bought our house when they retired, so he lived opposite the pub he was formerly landlord of. We moved to Essex.
I was sad when my sister, who now lives in South Africa, visited our old house back in 2016, told me the pub had been knocked down and houses / flats built on its site.
