The Cricketers at 340 London Road,
Mitcham, Surrey CR4 3ND is now closed and planning permission, ref 11/P3229, has
been applied for to demolish the current building and replace it with a 4-floor
block of 16 flats. As part of the planning process, an archaeological assessment
was undertaken which has revealed some of this pub's history:
Shown on 18th century maps as The Swan, the pub was demolished in 1800 and
rebuilt in 1803 and called The White Swan, then renamed The Cricketers in the
following decades.
Demolished around 1856 and rebuilt. Destroyed by a parachute mine dropped on 23
Sept 1940; however the bottle store was left intact and the business continued
from that building. The current building was built in 1957. The planning
application to demolish the pub and replace it with a block of flats has been
refused, and two appeals rejected by an independent inspector according to the
Mitcham Cricket Green Community and Heritage website. *
