The Black Lion pub and brewery were established c1546 by Flemish migrant Deryck Carver, who was the first Protestant Martyr of Mary Tudor, he was burnt in a barrel outside the Star Inn in Lewes 22nd  June 1555. The event is commemorated every November 5th in Lewes by the burning of effigies of the Pope.

The original Black Lion stood on the east side of the street (opposite the brewery) and was demolished in the 19th century.

The brewery continued as Chapmans until 1902, The Rock Brewery and then Fremlins. It was closed in 1968 and despite being possibly the oldest brewery in existence in the world was demolished in 1970 and the street widened.
In 1974 an exact replica of the oldest part of the brewery was built using many of the original flint cobbles and slates and was opened as The Deryck Carver, it was renamed in the 1980s as The Black Lion. *
