My maternal great grandfather used to run the North Star in Brighton. Frank Hayward is listed from 1918 (probably my great grandfather as my maternal grandfather, Frank Arthur Hayward, didn’t return from the great war until 1918 and, as far as I can remember, returned to work for the Post Office where he had worked before the war). My grandfather did not want to take over the running of the North Star from his father as he had a good job with the post office so his younger brother, my great uncle, Charlie Hayward took over and was certainly still there in the 1950s and early 1960s as far as I can remember. I was under the impression it was in the same family for many years and I remember my mother telling me some tales about my Great Grandfather’s strictness at mealtimes when all the grandchildren were visiting and my great uncle was a practical joker. I know it ceased to be a pub many years ago (it was very small inside) possibly after my uncle retired/died. I left Brighton 40 years ago but the last time I drove past, the old coloured pub windows were still there but It wasn’t possible to stop and take a photo because of the heavy traffic. *
