Sussex Express. 17 May 1963 Beer House Closes.
One of the oldest and most interesting beer houses in the Uckfield district, the Rose & Crown, Five Ash Down has closed.
Mrs L B Wren held the licence for the last 10 years, but the Rose & Crown has been in her family since 1929.
No one knows just how old the place is. Mr Wren told County Diary that originally it used to be a cottage selling beer from many East Sussex breweries, and next door was a stable sheltering horses for a timber-hauling business.
Mr Wren said he found many bills there dating back to the 1850's. Beer then cost 8d a gallon and tobacco was 4s 6d a pound. One could buy 5cwt of coal for 7s 5d, and coke was 9d a bushel.
Mr Wren who is a bus driver, said many people were still calling it the Rose and Crown, not realising it had closed.
