Chichester Observer. 04 March 1925
In accordance with instructions for the compensation authority that an area should be treated as redundant and not just one house. Mr J E Dell opposed for the police. on the grounds of redundancy, and named the following licenses. Westgate Area :
The Castle, publican, Westgate J Hart
The Swan, beerhouse, Westgate, Sarah Lale
The Waggon and Lamb, George William Davis, Somertown area
The Rainbow, publican, St Pauls road, John Edward Tucknott
The Waggon and Horses, publican, St Pauls road, Henry Wallington
The Spotted Cow, beerhouse, High street, Charles Stringer
The Bee Hive, beerhouse, Broyle road, Thomas White
The Bell Inn, publican, Broyle road, William Green

The Westgate Licenses were then considered.
Mr Wannop appeared for the brewers of the Waggon and Lamb abd Castle (Messrs Henty & Constable) and Mr Brutton for the brewers of the Swan (Portsmouth United Brewers).
The house they were objecting to was the Swan, as there had been no agreement between the brewers, they were asking for all three to be referred for compensation.
The three houses were within 150 yards of each other. The fully licensed houses had qmple accommodation and were well constructed.
The Swan accommodation was only fair as the Castle and Waggon and Lamb were sufficient. The three licenses were renewed.
