I was the landlord/licensee from August 1987 until September 1990. I was the last tenanted licensee for Charringtons at this pub. I went bust under Maggie Thatcher.
After me, Wayne _, from The Hartington, took over as manager and soon after
this the pub was sold off into the private sector. It became "The Golden
Gloves" in the 1990's and was a boxing centre, but not very successful, then
it passed on and became a private and very swish, but unsuccessful pub
restaurant called The castle. Recently it has been redeveloped and has a row
of shops where the bars used to be, and above area has been turned into
flats. A great shame as I used to use the pub in the 80's when Alan _ had
it, and I was a bus driver at the Churchdale road bus depot, and DJ'd there
many a time with my mobile disco show. It was a very historic place. *
