65 years at the Swan Inn, Falmer. Mrs Gladys Woodruff, who has lived here for 65 years, recounted the story of a gipsy raid on the Inn, as they were banned.
She bought the Swan from the Lord Chichester about 13 years ago, and it was made a free house about 20 years ago.
At one time, Falmer was a typical village, the church was very much its centre. Now with Sussex University dominating it, Falmer has changed.
SAhe saw the first motor omnibus drivr past the Swan in 1915. Before that the traffic was confined to horse drawn vehicles.
Prices have soared sincw 1903, when a pint was two pence, and a pipe of tobacco at 4 pence an ounce.
During WWII a training camp was set up near Falmer and 8,000 and 10,000 troops were stationed here.
Nowadays it is students from the University and the College.

Mrs G Woodruff funeral took place. Sh was licensee of the Swan Inn, Falmer from 1931 to 1974. She died on Monday aged 75.
Mrs Woodruff had lived at the Swan since 1903 when her family moved from the Cooksbridge Railway Hotel to take over the Falmer public house.
She was licensee for 43 years being succeeded in 1974 by her son, John.
