Black Horse Inn, 42 Priory Road, Hastings

Hastings pub history index

This may previously have been known As Johnson's Beer House. 1901 must have been an awful year for landlady Alice Green as this report from a misprint ridden local newspaper shows. This beer house stood in the desperately poor Halton district of Hastings where there were at least five other pubs/beer houses just a stone's throw away: The Royal Sussex Arms, The Halton Tavern, The Dun Horse, the Hope Inn and the Fortune of War. Today there are no pubs in this area. Priory Road was renumbered in 1903 and the Black Horse became No.204 Priory Road. It probably closed shortly before WW1. The area has since been redeveloped. The July 2010 photo shows the present block of flats which stand slightly to the east of the Black Horse site. Inset: the address plate. ***
