Cambridge Hotel, 57 Cambridge Road, Hastings

Hastings pub history index

at 45 Cambridge Road in 1901; It was originally called the Carpenter's Arms (The street seems to have been renumbered) and is listed in 1845, but it was a beer house before that. It was severely damaged by fire in 1876 and renamed the Cambridge Hotel in 1884. That name lasted about 100 years and it was then renamed Tavern In the Town. It then became the Beer Engine and is now called the Tubman, apparently after this character: Alfred Mills Stonham, better known as Biddy the Tubman. Local character Biddy later became a beach entertainer. A video of him can be found here. *** This pub was renamed the Union Bar in 2013. **

The redecoration of the pub is now complete. The local council have complained that it's an advert, out of keeping with the area and does not have planning permission, but I think you'll agree threre's a definate "WOW" factor about this. Local people have raised a petition to allow the pub to remain as it is in this photo. This compares with this disused print works just a stone's throw away from the pub. The print works has been in this condition for over 25 years. Apparently the council think this is in keeping with the area!
