Carlisle, 24 Pelham Street, Hastings

Hastings pub history index

This is the Pelham Arms in 1890 and earlier. The Carlisle Hotel (the back of the pub) in about 1924 trading under the name Carlisle Saloon. The pub has been rebuilt several times, the extension on the left hand side was added in 1920 and replaced the former beer garden. This view of the pub and its surroundings are now unrecognisable. The buildings to the right of the pub were demolished in 1930 when a new road and sea wall was built. The extension was also removed at this time and the pub was again rebuilt with flat roofs. The buildings to the left suffered bomb damage during WW2 and were all gone by the mid 1960s. After many years as a car park, this area is now occupied by a residential complex. The Carlisle is the only building in this photo to survive albeit in a different form. This pub was established in around 1820 as the Pelham Arms and renamed the Carlisle Hotel in 1892. It was rebuilt in its current form in around 1930.

Now simply called the Carlisle (regulars refer to it as the Carlie) it is a popular, friendly pub with live music (mostly heavy Rock) most weekends. There is a large function room with a second bar upstairs also with provision for live music. Please don't be put off by the appearance of the regulars (mostly bikers), they honestly are a great crowd and very friendly.  ***
