Mariners Home, West Beach Street, Hastings

At West Road in 1871 census then at junction of Commercial Road in 1881 census, and listed as this in 1878. Previously known as Coleman's Beer House and the Mariner's Home, this tiny pub was renamed Pelican in the 1890s. It stands on a junction and the back of the building faces West Street and the front faces a road that has at various times been called Commercial Road, West Beach Street and East Parade and the pub appears in different documents at different times in all these streets. The Pelican stopped being a pub in the 1930s and has seen more recent use as a gift and candy shop. It has recently been refurbished, but it is unclear what purpose it will serve in the future. It retains the name Pelican as can be seen. *** This pub is now closed, with the premises operated as a café (2016). **
