Hastings pub history index
On an official 1873 map at Hastings
library the Palmerston Inn at 75 Oueen's Road was shown as the Cottage Inn,
listed as at St Andrews Terrace in 1859. At this time that part of Queen's Road
was called St Andrew's Road. I am able to positively identify it as it is five
buildings north of the junction with Cross (later called Elford) Street. I don't
know when or why the establishment changed its name. The map could have been up
to two years out of date when it was issued.
At St Andrews Road in 1878. It was
probably named after Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, a former Lord
Warden of the Cinque Ports and who (as Lord Palmerston), also served as British
Prime Minister. 75 Queen's Road is now an Indian restaurant/take away. It looks
far too small to accommodate nine people as it apparently did in 1881, but it may
be bigger than it looks. I've never been in there. ***
