Hastings pub history index
This Pub closed in 1830! The Royal Oak
was in the High Street, but the address was No.1 Oak Passage, the Twitten to
it's left. This pub or beer house (it isn't clear what type of licence it held)
was then turned into the Hastings Dispensary, a type of clinic. It was bought by
a William Lucas Shadwell who dedicated it to the many desperately poor people of
the area in 1842. It was rebuilt and later became the family planning centre. It
continues in use, but is now simply called a clinic. The inscription in the
plasterwork says that the facility is supported entirely by voluntary
contributions.
Twitten* a local name for one of the many narrow passages in
this area, often consisting of a mixture of steep hills and steps and sometimes
passing through arches in adjacent buildings. **
