Albion Inn, 30 River Road, Littlehampton

Littlehampton pub history index

The building still remains today as a private residence but the freestanding post and metalwork for the hanging sign still exists in the front garden of the adjacent terrace house. *
A plaque built into the wall of adjacent cottages says – ‘Albion Terrace 1865’. The 1876 1:2500 scale Ordnance Survey map of the area indicates that the Albion was part of this terrace as confirmed by the construction still visible at first floor level. The map also indicates that the front gardens of all of the terrace were still intact therefore it is likely that the pub usage either hadn’t been started when the area was surveyed (probably 1874/5) or was operating from the ‘front room’ of the original cottage. The ground floor extension up to the edge of the pavement, taking in all of the front garden, is shown in the 1898 version of the map. *
There are two beer retailers listed in Ferry Road as it was called at that time in the Post Office Directory and one, Thomas Crawford, again in the 1870 PO Directory. The missing area in the 1871 census – see below – prevents positively linking him with the Albion but it is probable as all other pubs have the proprietors designated in Directories. *

1866 / Possibly Thomas David Staples / Beer retailer / Post Office Directory – PH name not listed *

1871 Census:
The enumerator for District 8, which included River Road, did not complete his listings sequentially, he seems to have dodged about somewhat making the tracing of pub proprietors very difficult. *

He incorrectly annotated most of the River Road properties as being in Surrey Street from before the Ship and Anchor, number 3, to beyond the Rose and Crown, number 38. He then recorded Ferry Road (now Terminus Road), Hampton Court and Purbeck Place, finally listing the remainder of River Road annotating it as such. *

Hampton Court and Purbeck Place were not listed where they were located geographically in either River Road or Ferry Road but were listed one after the other as above. *

No person listed at these premises, this may be due to the above issue. *
