Previous research by others indicated that the Custom House
Tavern was renamed the Arun View but the 1870 Kelly’s Directory listed both,
each with its own proprietor; they therefore must have been separate premises. *
The following directory entries indicate this Public House’s existence but as
the name does not appear again it is impossible to locate it with any certainty.
It was possibly renamed the Steam Packet or rebuilt to become that. *

1871 Census:
The enumerator for District 8, which included River Road, did not complete his
listings sequentially, he seems to have dodged about somewhat making the tracing
of pub proprietors very difficult. *
He incorrectly annotated most of the River Road properties as being in Surrey
Street from before the Ship and Anchor, number 3, to beyond the Rose and Crown,
number 38. He then recorded Ferry Road (now Terminus Road), Hampton Court and
Purbeck Place, finally listing the remainder of River Road annotating it as
such. *
Hampton Court and Purbeck Place were not listed where they were located
geographically in either River Road or Ferry Road but were listed one after the
other as above. *
No proprietor found for this property; see the Steam Packet for a possible
answer. *
