Originally the Forresters Home(1) later Forresters Arms(2), 45(3) East Street, currently The General Henry, Littlehampton. *
I understand that it was the one time home of Colonel Shrapnel of the exploding shell fame. Henry Shrapnel died in 1842. *+

1861 Note: The following were listed as living in East Street in entry number 81 in the census records and I suspect that it was at this Public House as George Aldridge was listed as living here in the 1871 Post Office Directory. *
1861 / George Aldridge / Head, Innkeeper / 48 / Angmering, Sussex / Census *
1861 / Caroline Aldridge / Wife / 45 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1861 / Eliza Aldridge / Daughter / 17 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1861 / Caroline Aldridge / Daughter / 12 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1861 / Fanny Aldridge / Daughter / 10 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1861 / Herriett Aldridge / Daughter / 7 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1861 / Carole Aldridge / Daughter / 5 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1861 / S.J. Aldridge / Daughter / 2 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
(Note: Following the above record number 81, record number 82 is indicated
as being a separate premises but the first person is recorded as a Lodger
which seems to indicate that he and the following people, also lodger
occupants, were lodgers of George Aldridge. The Forresters Home was too
small to accommodate all of them so presumably they were in the adjacent
Oddfellows' Arms which, again presumably, was also run by George Aldridge.
These people have been listed in the Oddfellows Arms entry. Unfortunately
neither street numbers nor building names were recorded.) *
1871 / George Aldridge / Beer retailer / Post Office Directory *
1871 / George Aldridge / Head, Beer Retailer & Gardener / 59 / Angmering, Sussex / Census *
1871 / Caroline Aldridge / Wife / 55 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1871 / Eliza Ayling / Daughter, Sailors wife / 26 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1871 / Caroline Ayling / Daughter / 22 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1871 / Sarah I Ayling / Daughter, scholar / 12 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
1871 / John Aldridge / Son / 9 / Littlehampton, Sussex / Census
(Note: The above is entry number 96 in the census book and at the end of the
entry there are a pair of backward sloping lines indicating the end of that
premises occupation but this is crossed through with a pair of forward
sloping lines. The next entry is number 96+ and for the first entry the
relationship to head of family states Lodger. The persons listed in this
entry are therefore clearly lodging with George Aldridge who was living at
the Forresters Home but those premises were too small to accommodate all of
them. I therefore believe that they were actually living in the adjacent
Oddfellows Arms premises, which presumably was also run by George Aldridge.
Neither entry 95 or 97 could be the Oddfellows Arms. See the Oddfellows
Arms section for these people.) *

I think missing the landlord in the late sixties was George Walsher a keen member of Littlehampton cricket club. I think he was a wicket keeper for the town. *+
